Aim of the project: To renovate The Coach House as a permanent base for Pilates teaching and to offer affordable space to individuals and community groups to meet and work.
The Coach House is an historic building which lies in the heart of the Wirksworth Conservation area, and although not listed it is protected by an Article 4 Direction and plays a significant part in contributing to the character of Crown Yard.
The former coach house, stable and workshop belonged to the town's renowned ironmonger business and before that was one of the buildings in the yard of the Crown Hotel. The building is believed to date from mid 18th Century and was in a semi derelict state when purchased. The roof was collapsing forcing the walls to bow out, many of the timbers were rotten and the walls were saturated.
The renovation and new uses of the Coach House will compliment the neighbouring homes and varied workspaces of Crown Yard and we hope it will make a positive contribution to the vitality of the Town Centre. The central yet quiet location of the Coach House will be convenient for users of the building with regular bus services and ample parking in the Market Place and other town car parks.
Paul Fieldhouse, architect and joint owner of the building, has maximised the potential of the spaces in the building with genuine sensitivity for its character and heritage. Where ever possible all the original materials have been reused and any replacements have been obtained locally. The fragility of the building's structure as well as the curved walls of the original building have been a real challenge for both the architect and the builders, requiring meticulous detail and innovation.
We have been very fortunate to have two highly skilled builders working on the Coach House project. John Frith has completed the very complicated roof restoration with wonderful results and Chris Goodman and his talented team, Hi Tor Builders, have now completed the restoration, tackling the many challenges inherent in an old semi derelict building with skill and flair.
